URGENT APPEAL FOR SOLIDARITY – THE FIRE HAS REACHED GREBENAC AND KAJTASOVO!

August 20, 2026

Fire near Grebenac and Kajtasovo

The National Council of the Romanian National Minority in Serbia is issuing an urgent appeal to all people of goodwill, to the Romanian community in Serbia, as well as to our brothers and friends in Romania and around the world: GREBENAC NEEDS HELP!

The fire that broke out in the Deliblato area has spread and reached the vicinity of the settlements of Grebenac and Kajtasovo. The situation is serious, while people on the ground, firefighters and volunteers are making enormous efforts to contain the fire and protect homes, households and local communities.

URGENTLY NEEDED:

We are making a special appeal to organizations, institutions, communities and all Romanians who are able to provide assistance, either directly or by sharing this appeal.

Grebenac is one of the oldest Romanian settlements in the Serbian Banat, a community in which the Romanian language, faith, culture and identity have been preserved throughout generations. The Church of “The Ascension of the Lord” in Grebenac, dating back to 1722, is one of the oldest documented Orthodox places of worship of the Romanian people in this part of the Banat and represents a symbol of the continuity of the Romanian community.

Today, Grebenac needs our help!

We especially appeal to farmers and to everyone who has tractors, agricultural machinery, water tanks, shovels or other equipment that may be useful to respond to the appeal of the people of Grebenac and Kajtasovo.

At the same time, we urge all volunteers to strictly follow the instructions of firefighters, competent authorities and intervention teams and not to enter areas where there is danger without proper coordination.

We thank everyone who, in these difficult moments, is making an enormous effort in the fight against the fire – the institutions and state structures involved in the intervention, firefighters and other emergency services, as well as the residents, volunteers and all people of goodwill who have mobilized and are contributing, each according to their abilities, to protecting the people, homes and communities affected.

The President of the National Council of the Romanian National Minority, Dr. Valentin Ardelean, is in Bela Crkva, attending a meeting of the Emergency Situations Headquarters, where the situation is being assessed and intervention measures are being coordinated. On the ground in Grebenac are the Vice-President of the Council, Traian Cacina, Council member from Grebenac, Matei Miclea, and the Secretary of the Council, Marian Mohan, together with the local community, the primary school and everyone involved in the intervention.

We appeal to everyone who can help: NOW IS THE TIME! Grebenac and Kajtasovo need our solidarity!

Please share this appeal as widely as possible. Every share can help bring a volunteer, a tractor, water or food to where it is needed most.

President of the CNMNR
Dr. Valentin Ardelean
